1. This week we learned about the potential benefits and drawbacks to clinical decision support systems (CDSSs). Create a “Pros” versus “Cons” table with a column for “Pro” and a separate column for “Con”. Include at least 3 items for each column. Next to each item, provide a brief rationale as to why you included it on the respective list.
  2. The primary goal of a CDSS is to leverage data and the scientific evidence to help guide appropriate decision making. CDSSs directly assist the clinician in making decisions about specific patients. For this discussion thread post, you are to assume your future role as an APN and create a clinical patient and scenario to illustrate an exemplary depiction of how a CDSS might influence your decision. This post is an opportunity for you to be innovative, so have fun! Application of Course Knowledge: Demonstrate the ability to analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles and concepts learned in the course lesson and outside readings.
  • Scholarliness and Scholarly Sources: Demonstrates achievement of scholarly inquiry for professional and academic decisions using valid, relevant, and reliable outside scholarly source to contribute to the discussion thread.
  • Writing Mechanics: Grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation are accurate. In-text and reference citations should be formatted using correct APA guidelines.
  • Direct Quotes: Good writing calls for the limited use of direct quotes. Direct quotes in discussions are to be limited to one short quotation (not to exceed 15 words). The quote must add substantively to the discussion. Points will be deducted under the grammar, syntax, APA category.

NO LESS THAN THREE Scholarly sources to support the initial discussion post

For the final assignment in this course, I would like you to revisit this question with the goal of demonstrating to me how your knowledge about language has changed over the course of this semester.

Your final product will have two parts:

For the first part, I would like you to create word or concept map, mind map (see the explanation on this website Links to an external site.if you are unfamiliar with idea maps), infographic, or some other graphic method of your preference that will allow you to organize your ideas semantically.

Note that when you create an idea map, the goal is to organize the ideas logically, i.e., think about how they relate to each other and how they relate to the main idea.  There is no single correct response, but keep in mind that I’m looking for evidence of learning.

You may choose to look at what you submitted back in Module 1 and build upon that.  In addition, it may be helpful to complete the following steps before creating your graphic map of ideas:

  1. Brainstorm what you know about language now.  Given what you’ve learned in this course, how would you be able to expand upon your original ideas in response to this question? What new terms and concepts would you be able to include now that you have completed the course? You may want to think broadly about the main topics we’ve covered for inspiration.
  2. Jot down everything that comes to mind. The best way to do this is to create a list as you think. Don’t spend too much time writing down lengthy ideas. This should be a quick brainstorming activity.
  3. Review your list and organize your ideas in a meaningful/logical way.  I would like to “see” your understanding of how the concepts and terms you’ve learned relate to one another.

For the second part, you will write a brief reflection (about 1 single-spaced paragraph, definitely no more than 1/2 page) about one thing that you learned in this course that was surprising or that piqued your interest.  I’m looking for a carefully-formulated, meaningful, and concise reflection. I don’t want you to tell me that your understanding of language has changed – I want you to show me that it has changed.

MSW 6007: Week 8 – Signature Assignment: Prepare a Mock Research Design for an Ethical Study in Social Work

MSW 6007: Week 8 – Signature Assignment: Prepare a Mock Research Design for an Ethical Study in Social Work

For your final assignment, please select one of the following two scenarios to complete your Signature Assignment.

Scenario 1: Survey Design

You are an administrator working in a residential hospice center that provides palliative and end-of-life care to adults with terminal diagnoses and a medical prognosis of less than 6 months to live. The hospice center also provides supportive services to the families of those terminally ill, such as end-of-life planning services and grief counseling.  The hospice center receives funding from multiple sources, including insurance payments, third party reimbursements, and private payments, and provides charity care for those who are uninsured/unable to pay for services. Much of the charity care is funded by received donations and grants awarded annually to the hospice center. Recently, the hospice center has been asked by one of the primary charity care funders to conduct research on the efficacy and client satisfaction of the support programs for families of the terminally ill residents. Your task is to develop a survey research design to gather information on the satisfaction of the families who are receiving support services. You will assess client satisfaction by completing this task.

Complete the following for your written submission:

  • Identify the primary research question you will address and any hypotheses you may be testing. Determine the kinds of variables you want to measure. What questions do you want to have answered? What is the best way to go about getting those answers?
  • Identify the population you will survey and analyze any ethical concerns or considerations you may need to keep in mind with this population. Include a discussion of any ethical, cultural, or socioeconomic concerns that a researcher must be mindful of.
  • Determine what mode of data collection you will use (e.g., personal interviews, telephone surveys, mailed questionnaires/drop-off surveys, web-based surveys, and email-based surveys) and provide a rationale for your choice.
  • Explain the type of data analyses you will complete to answer your questions, including any descriptive/inferential statistics you would utilize.
  • Discuss any threats to reliability and validity and any other limitations of your study.
  • Discuss how you will present your study findings to the charity care funders who have requested the study in an ethical and professional manner. Explain what you would do if the research findings painted the support services in a negative light.
  • Be sure your study design demonstrates cultural competence, clear adherence to social work ethics, and sensitivity to marginalized and oppressed populations.

Scenario 2: Program Evaluation Design

Assume you are a program evaluator and that you are completing an evaluation at the 6-month interval for the following fictitious program. Read the program description, and then complete the tasks that follow:

Safe Haven is a shelter for adolescent runaways waiting for a court determination and trial. It was established as an alternative location to place adolescents instead of the general jail population. The goal of the shelter is to keep the residents safe while they wait for their court date. The ages of the residents range from 14 to 17. The Safe Haven staff monitors three safety risks for this population: harm to others, harm to self, and alcohol or drug use. Staff provides specific programming to address these three issues.

First, mandatory group counseling is provided daily from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, so residents can learn conflict resolution skills to prevent them from harming others. During this group session, members listen to a 30-minute curriculum-based presentation followed by a demonstration. Group members then practice the skills with each other.

Second, all residents are monitored for depression and suicidal ideations to prevent self-harm. Residents meet Monday through Friday for 30 minutes with a social worker for mandatory individual counseling.

Finally, group members participate in a drug and alcohol education class. This is also a curriculum-based educational presentation on refusal skills followed by group practice and process discussions. This mandatory group meets daily from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Urinalyses are conducted on residents every 3 days and a breath analysis every day before bed.

The rest of the days throughout the week, residents are tutored by a teacher who is brought into the shelter. On weekends, residents receive visitors and participate in recreational activities at the shelter under close supervision.

  • Design a program description for this program that includes the types of services being provided and their location; the program’s mission; the frequency with which services are offered, including time and day; and characteristics of the people you serve (number of residents, gender, race, age, income, etc.).
  • Be sure to include a discussion of any ethical, cultural, or socioeconomic concerns that the program evaluation must consider when developing the evaluation plan.
  • Develop a minimum of three program objectives. Objectives should be able to meet the SMART standard (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely or time-bound) and should demonstrate cultural competence, clear adherence to social work ethics, and sensitivity to marginalized and oppressed populations.
  • Develop a plan to evaluate the MOST objectives.

MSW 6007: Week 7 – Assignment: Critique Measures for Use in Social Work

MSW 6007: Week 7 – Assignment: Critique Measures for Use in Social Work

The goal of this assignment is for you to become familiar with some of the measures that could be used to assess social work practice outcomes. After you have read the assigned readings, identify and critique one measure of an outcome in an area of interest. Select a measure that you would administer to your clients to guide your interventions and treatment planning. Good sources of measures in the NCU Library include EBSCOhost, Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print, ProQuest, PsychiatryOnline, and PsycTESTS.

Download the Measure Critique Outline and Sample Measure Critique documents from this week’s resources. Using the Sample Measure Critique as a guide, complete the Measure Critique Outline for the measure you selected.

Be sure to send an email to your professor by Wednesday of this week in which you identify one or more measures you are considering evaluating so that your professor can provide guidance on the best one to use for this assignment. For example, you would not want to evaluate a psychological test like the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), which social workers in most states cannot administer nor interpret. Instead, you should search for a measure of couple and family functioning, although individual screening tests, like the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), may also be acceptable.

Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

MSW6006: Week 8 – Signature Assignment: Explore Evidence-Based Intervention in a Human Service Organization

MSW6006: Week 8 – Signature Assignment: Explore Evidence-Based Intervention in a Human Service Organization

Identify a specific human service organization (one in which you now work, have worked, or for which you have access to information). Conduct research to determine any issue(s) this organization faces that you as a social work leader could address.

Prepare a comprehensive research paper to address the following:

  • Identify the organization and provide its mission, size, programs, services, and a brief description of the leadership team.
  • Provide the organizational structure of the agency.
  • Explain an issue or problem that the organization is facing or has faced in the recent past.
  • Analyze this issue or problem from a leadership theoretical perspective. Pay particular attention to change approaches that are evidence-based.
  • Discuss the change approach used by the leader(s) of the organization. Determine which characteristics and style of leadership may have contributed to the problem. Explain which characteristics and styles are necessary to address the problem. Support your findings with research supported by theory.
  • Explain how these leadership styles and theories support the actions of the leader or suggest leaders should pursue a different approach to change.
  • Analyze how the leadership changes will fit within the context of the organization while upholding ethical standards required of social work professionals.

Support your assignment with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

6006: Week 7 – Assignment: Evaluate Social Work Licensure Requirements

6006: Week 7 – Assignment: Evaluate Social Work Licensure Requirements

Assume you were asked to create a visual aid to assist new social workers in understanding how state licensure requirements and federal legislation are related and complement each other in your state of practice. Create a diagram to illustrate licensure and regulation requirements and how they intersect. You may create your own design or use a template available from Word, PowerPoint, or another software program. This diagram should contain the following:

  • Briefly explain the state office that oversees social work licensure.
  • Examine the different types of social work licensure in your state.
  • Illustrate the requirements for each type of license.
  • Outline how the requirements for licensure have evolved by assessing the legislation related to licensure in your state. Start when licensure was first passed in your state, and continue with how it has changed/evolved with each piece of follow-up legislation.
  • Finally, address the ways that the information from your analysis may be used to advance practice, policy, and service delivery in your organization.

Support your visual aid with at least three resources.

Length: Visual aid plus reference list.

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

READ- And reply

  • Computerized alerts and reminders for providers and patients

Allergy alerts can prevent medication errors and can be clarified if needed. Patients can benefit from using portals or APPS that have lists of interactions or potential allergies at home. Reminders for providers to administer medication or follow up with a medication response to treatment are beneficial (Keasberry et al, 2017). Patients may use APPs that have reminders set to when they need to take their medication or check their blood pressure, blood sugar or weigh themselves (Yoo et al, 2020).

  • Drug-drug interaction alerts

The system will alert providers, pharmacists, and nurses if there is a potential for drug-drug interactions preventing harm to patients. In patients with multiple health problems, and on multiple medications, this is a useful tool to prevent errors and harm (Keasberry et al, 2017).

  • Condition-specific order sets

When providers use condition-specific order sets, they tend to adhere to treatment guidelines  increasing patient outcomes. Appropriate are noted to be ordered more frequently as well. Clinicians tend to follow guidelines of care more closely, that includes effective disease management, treatment, and appropriate use of medications (Keasberry et al, 2017).

  • Financial impact to organization to implement and maintain

Purchasing, maintaining and training are all costly to organizations and must be considered. Some organizations are hesitant to implement CDSS due to the upfront cost, and cost of maintaining and updating the system, but the benefits of improved care, and prevention of medical errors must be considered (Keasberry, 2017).

  • Alarm fatigue

In a study of an urban academic hospital in the emergency room, it was found that emergency department physicians received 13.75 alerts for every 100 orders entered. Two-thirds were overridden, which is considered significant and has great potential for increased patient harm (Yoo et al, 2020). Providers are inundated with alarms and alerts throughout their shift and some are silenced and ignored which can have adverse outcomes for patients. Studies like this are imperative in performance improvement initiatives for CDSS programs and workflow processes for providers.

  • Increased use of technology time

Providers may spend more time using technology and less time with patients due to flow of the system, placing orders, difficulty in finding what they need within the system, and answering alerts and alarms. This can lead to frustration for the provider and patient, and decrease satisfaction for both (Keasberry et al, 2017).

Mr. X came into clinic today for a follow up for his chronic atrial fibrillation. He has expressed concern about risk of stroke and bleeding,  and has shared those concerns with me, his APN. It is estimated that 2.3 million Americans suffer from atrial-fibrillation (AF) and that number is growing with an expected 10 million by 2050 (Stacy et al, 2022). There are many tools through CDSSs that may help with AF including apps that monitor cardiac rate and rhythms, and medications. By inputting Mr. X’s information such as lab results, medications, and diagnosis of AF, the CDSS will guide me to make the best clinical decisions to manage his care that is evidenced based. The CDSS can be overridden if clinical judgement warrants. The CDSS can be beneficial in alerting providers to those who may be at higher risk for bleeding due to treatment with warfarin based on their lab results. It can also give dosage recommendations or offer other treatment options. As a new APN, this CDSS tool is helpful as it has the clinical guidelines, recommendations, and alerts built in to one system (Stacy et al, 2022)
