1) Please choose a job that you are familiar with (or even make up a job if you’d like) to use to respond to short answer questions on the exam. 1) Briefly describe the job including the job title and three of the essential functions (the most important job duties–can be your opinion) of that job, and 2) three knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSAs) that are most critical (in your opinion) for this job.

2)) Assume that multiple positions are open at your organization for your job from Question #1 and assume that you are the HR Manager tasked with filling these positions. 1) What two recruiting sources will you use to locate applicants for this job? These can be sources discussed in class or other sources that you are aware of that would be useful. 2) Briefly explain why each of those sources would be helpful for locating the KSAs for this particular job. 3) Discuss a recruitment metric that you would use to assess the effectiveness of each recruitment source.

3) Assume that your recruitment efforts worked well and you received a large number of applicants for the position you discussed in Question #1. 1) Considering the KSAs you listed as important for this job, pick two selection assessments/tests that you would use to screen applicants for this position (using the selection methods we discussed in Chapter 6). 2) Briefly note why these two assessments would be appropriate, and 3) also explain what applicant KSA each method would help you to measure.

4) Looking at the recruitment function more broadly for your organization, briefly discuss five issues/ideas you would incorporate to increase the effectiveness of your recruitment efforts drawing from information you learned in the recruitment chapter and/or from your own personal experience with this job

5) As we discussed in class, measurement issues are important when collecting applicant data which you will use to make selection decisions. 1) Discuss how item difficulty level impacts the reliability of a test. 2) Discuss a reliability approach, and 3) a validity approach that you would use to examine either of your assessment methods (discussed above in your Question #4 response) prior to using it for collecting applicant data. Be sure to explain what each approach is attempting to determine about the test.

6) As we discussed in class, we judge selection methods (or assessments/tests) based on their reliability and validity. With respect to the following reliability coefficient: rxx = .68, 1) explain what this stastistic means and 2) discuss why this is or is not an acceptable level of reliability for selection purposes. Examine the following validity coefficient: rxy = -.33 (p < .07). 3) Is this validity coefficient acceptable in terms of practical significance and/or statistical significance (be sure to explain why or why not)?

7) Assume that the selection process went well and you were able to hire new employees into the vacant positions for the job in your response to Question 1. Also assume that it turns out that the new hires were not up to speed on one of the KSAs you listed for this job. Using Phase 2 of the Systems Approach (Training Design), 1) note the KSA for which you will be developing the training program, and 2) discuss two learning principles that you would incorporate into the training program and why it would be beneficial to do so for learning this particular KSA. 3) Explain an additional learning principle you would consider incorporating into the training program to ensure that what gets learned in training gets transferred back on the job.

8) Using Phase 3 of the Systems Approach (Training Implementation), 1) briefly discuss how you would implement training employees on the KSA you used in Question #7 (in other words, what type of off-the-job or on-the- job approach would you use)? 2) Discuss why your chosen approach would be an appropriate training method for this particular KSA? 3) Discuss an advantage and a disadvantage associated with the approach you chose.

9) Assume some time has passed and it is now time to evaluate the new employees’ job performance in the job you described in your Question 1 response. Using what you learned in Chapter 8, discuss five general issues that you would take into account when developing performance criteria and/or issues you would consider to increase the effectiveness of the performance appraisal process for evaluating your employees.

10) Assume your organization is considering using a 360-degree feedback approach to evaluate employee performance for the job in Question #1. 1) Choose two sources (other than the employee’s supervisor as a source for rating employees’ performance) whom you would use to rate employees in this particular job and discuss why you would use each of these sources. 2) Also note a possible advantage and a disadvantage of using each source for rating employee performance.
