Note: This may be an uncomfortable assignment and you may experience feelings of discomfort. In order to understand how our own identities and cultural background impact anticipated discrimination as well as how we may treat others, we need to think about our own lived experiences. Please contact me if you would like to talk more about any thoughts/feelings/feedback you may have during this assignment. This assignment will be confidential and I am the only person who will see your responses.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Please complete the Intersectional Anticipated Discrimination Scale (InDI-A) by Ayden Scheim (in the table below)
    • When you are completing the scale, use the numbers in parentheses highlighted in yellow below.After you have answered all 9 questions, add up your numeric scores for all 9 answers and then divide the total by 9
      • For example, 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 0 + 1 = 18
      • 18 divided by 9= 2, which means the score on the Anticipated Discrimination Scale is 2. You can have a score between 0 and 4, with higher scores indicating higher levels of anticipated discrimination.
    • After completing the scale, please answer the following questions:
  1. Describe your own social identities. If you do not feel comfortable describing all your identities you do not need to:
    1. For example: I would describe my identities as an able-bodied, heterosexual, cisgender White woman. Another individual may describe themself as a disabled, gay, LatinX Man, and someone else might describe themselves as a Queer Black woman.
  2. Describe how your identities are viewed in your own culture. For example, are all of your identities accepted? Have you ever felt like you had to hide one of your identities?
  3. How was your experience completing the Anticipated Discrimination Scale? Were you surprised at your score? Please be specific here.
  4. How might holding multiple social identities (intersectionality) impact an individual’s decision to seek therapy?
  5. How can psychologists incorporate theories of intersectionality when treating patients? Please be specific here and use concepts we have already covered in class and/or recommendations from previously conducted research studies.

These questions are about experiences related to who you are. This includes both how you describe yourself and how others might describe you. For example, your skin color, ancestry, nationality, religion, gender, sexuality, age, weight, disability or mental health issue, and income.
