RE: Discussion – Week 3

Two articles authored by the researcher David Lisak on the topics of the undetected rapist and predatory nature.

Lisak, David; Miller, Paul M. (February 2002). “Repeat rape and multiple offending among undetected rapists”. Violence & Victims. 17 (1): 73–84. doi:10.1891/vivi.17.1.73.33638.

Lisak, David (September 1994). “Subjective assessment of relationships with parents by sexually aggressive and nonaggressive men”. Journal of Interpersonal Violence. Sage. 9 (3): 399–411. doi:10.1177/088626094009003008.

Two potential research questions related to the Sessions episode.

  1. Why was there a root cause for Talia to think she could handle the assault and choose not to report it?
  2. Where did the desire come from for Eric want to want to assault?

Consider potential ethical or political issues related to the feasibility of investigating the questions.

An ethical issue would be taking advantage of a client and not allowing them the liberty to end the experiment. In the case of Talia in the very first meeting at the RCC, she was provided with basic information about the services (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). Anytime you do anything with any client you have to let them know beforehand everything taking place. They have a right unless it is court mandated to chose or decline to continue services. Talia could have said she didn’t want to participate and there was nothing that could have been done.

Evaluate each question in terms of how it might:

Contribute to development of new knowledge for social work

By doing research to answer questions that involve clients that may be in countered. Will help social workers to understand why the acts were committed in the first place. With this information, it will help the social worker to know what resources may prove to be beneficial for the client. With studies done that have been evaluated and data collected to support the findings is necessary to prove the validity of the study. Prior to doing any research, it is important to have all participants sign written consent forms that clarify the ethical basis of the study before any of them can participate in the research. In the case of Toya and Eric in intentionally picked which female he wanted to be with at the party. He expounded on there is a lot of alcohol. Toya was in no condition to go upstairs and understand what was going on. It was almost like he waited until she was vulnerable to make a move. Social workers could learn and understand from research the predatory behavior that Eric displayed in the video. Clients that would come in for services would receive better resources if the social worker is knowledgeable.

Lead to more effective practice interventions

Effective practice intervention means to integrate individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research that will be used for intervention measures. With high numbers of college such as Talia and other students reporting acts of interpersonal violence or rape, this research is necessary to know for intervention (Lisak & Miller, 2002).

Lead to social change

One thing that can lead to social change is a client’s geographical setting. This ultimately governs the form of society family, marriage, economy, religion, government and explains social change.

Be useful to other researchers

Other researchers can use these tested measures to expound on and advance. If the research has already been done and proven to work then the foundation is already there for the predecessors. Data collected for instance in Talia case would pave intervention practices for others that may have gone through the same type situation.
