Using Your Strengths and Talents

Using Your Strengths and Talents

Getting Started

“Do not neglect your gift, which was given you…” 1 Timothy 4:14 (NIV).

You are a social worker gifted with unique strengths and talents. God has blessed you with these and given you the responsibility of using them for His glory.

In Matthew 25, Jesus tells a parable about men given talents according to their ability. Those who used their talents wisely were blessed in the end with increased talents and were called “good and faithful servants.” The one who hid and did not use his talents was referred to as a “wicked, lazy servant.” Jesus continued to say, “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 25:29, 30).

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms…so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ” 1 Peter 4:10, 11b (NIV).

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14–16 (NIV)

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Romans 12:6–8 (NIV)

Take some time to reflect upon your gifts and how you can use them to bring about God’s glory. Ask yourself whether you are being a good steward of what God has blessed you with. This week, you are encouraged to use your gifts to benefit the Kingdom of God. Your gifts can be used to benefit your friends, family, strangers, and those in your field placement.
