How does nonverbal communication impact our perception of one another?  Do you believe that verbal or nonverbal communication is more likely to be misunderstood?  How has the COVID 19 crisis impacted our nonverbal behavior?

Nonverbal communication plays a significant role in our lives. It can improve our ability to engage in everyday life. I believe nonverbal communication is more likely to be misunderstood. Some say that it’s a look I have that gives off a flirty vibe. It’s nothing intentionally it’s a look that’s in my eyes. COVID 19 has impacted our verbal communication by spiking the proxemics communications. We have always been close to one another with crowded city buses and malls. Now the bus has more seats open, and the mall has fewer people inside.

Nonverbal communication highly impacts our perception of one another because the way we communicate nonverbally leaves other people with more impressions than what we are actually saying. For instance, vocalics is one of the channels of nonverbal communication and are the aspects of the voice that convey a certain meaning. For example, someone who speaks in a loud volume might be seen by everyone as, “the loud one,” more than anything else. I believe nonverbal communication is more likely to be misunderstood because it can be interpreted many different ways and there are more components to this form of communicating. When something verbal is misunderstood it can easily be explained by the person who said it to the person that did not get it. For instance, here in Texas we say “Howdy” and people from other states most likely don’t get it, but if its explained to them, they will most likely understand. However, nonverbal communication is more likely to be misunderstood because someone who speaks loud might be be seen as someone who is angry and is looking for trouble. Or some people don’t like shaking hands and that might be misunderstood by others and be seen as rude or might think that their hands are dirty. COVID 19 has impacted our nonverbal communication in a negative way due to the fact that we are not interacting in person that much anymore and are not able to practice acceptable manners and nonverbal communication in general.
