n the Footsteps of Crazy Horse is a book that received a lot of reviews when it came out. Reading reviews of a book you’ve already read can be interesting because the reviewer may point out ideas or elements that you didn’t notice, or the reviewer may like or dislike different things about the book, which can help you clarify your own ideas about it. For this assignment, you will read a review of In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse and write an essay response that analyzes the book review and provides your own ideas about the book.
Look through the three book reviews linked below and choose one of them to write about. Your essay response should address the following questions, but you don’t have to answer them in this order.
- What do you agree with in the review? What do you disagree with?
- What did the book review help you understand about the book that wasn’t clear to you before? What did it point out that you hadn’t thought about?
- Did the book review change your opinion of any part of the book?
- If you were writing a review of the book, what themes would you bring up? What parts of the story would you quote or describe in detail because they are significant? What would you say are its strengths and weaknesses?
- If you were writing a review of the book, who would you recommend it to and why?
Your essay response should be 3 pages long, double-spaced, and should be well-organized, with coherent paragraphs and competent grammar and spelling. Make sure you use in-text MLA citations for all quotes and paraphrases, and also use attributive language in your sentences (like “the review author writes that….”). Include a Works Cited list at the end with a citation for the review you chose, and the book itself. You should not use any other sources, but if you do for some reason, you must use in-text citations and put them on the list.
