This discussion will summarize the article “Closing the Gap in a Generation: Health Equity Through Action on the Social Determinants of Health (Nikora & McFarlane, 2010). This article is a review of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) research to determine what effects social factors have on global health and how this information could be used to improve health on a global scale. Social determinants of health include education, living conditions, economic factors such as employment and poverty, access to health care, social groups, and environmental exposures (Lehmann, 2019).

The article reviews the report that was issued by the Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH). The reviewers discuss the report which is divided into six chapters. The goals of the report are to understand and identify health problems, improve life and health conditions, and examine the use of resources to improve public health (Nikora & McFarlane, 2010). The six chapters of the report discuss the identification of the problem of health disparity and the mission and goals of the commission, an explanation of the commission’s task and organization, daily living conditions, financial resources, and identification of corrective action needed to improve global health (Nikora & McFarlane, 2010).

The authors agree that the WHO and the commission were effective in identifying the social determinants of health inequity; however, they point out the fact that the report lacks identification of solutions for the problems and does not fully represent the details of the research. According to this article, some of the data is not specific enough in providing statistics that need to be accurately reported in order to take appropriate actions to improve conditions that affect health.

Another criticism of the report, according to Nikora & McFarlane, is that the conclusions and recommended actions are not specific enough which prevents them from being implemented (2010). The authors also point out that many of the recommendations would probably not be effective, especially in Africa where resources are limited and the population is exposed to detrimental environmental and social factors that cannot be easily remedied.

The authors state that the report does identify common social determinants of global health but that these factors are described in a broad scope. The point out that not all areas impacted by similar social determinants have the ability and resources to overcome these issues. More regionally focused interventions are required to make changes to improve global health.

How can identification of social determinants of health be used to improve quality of health care for the global population?
