There are different types of research in the nursing community. Two types which I will discuss today are qualitative and quantitative studies. Quantitative research studies gather data systematically using statistical numbers, like a blood pressure reading (Polit & Beck, 2018). Meanwhile qualitative research studies gather data using non-numerical data, more like verbal like describing the pain (Polit & Beck, 2018). Nursing practice is modifies based of a research findings because as a profession, nurses need to keep up with current practice. Every day there’s a new research study that can improve or change a patient’s life. An example of a quantitative study that has made an impact is a study done on breastfeeding late preterm infants. In this study, the researchers used 122 newborn mothers to gather quantitative data regarding breast feeding (Dosani, Hemraj, Premji, Currie, Reilly, Lodha., Young, Hall, 2017). The conclusion of this study is that mothers do have a hard time brest feeding their late preterm infants, as a nurse, now we know that we need to reach out more to these mothers to make sure they have all the support and education possible (Dosani et al, 2017).
