With any project, there are limitations and risks that need to be taken into account and addressed to ensure the project’s ultimate success. Agile is more focused on meeting the user’s satisfaction by delivering good products in timely manner. It is more challenging for project managers to balance cost, quality, and faster results. Project managers need to be aware of these constraints that come into play while delivering the results.

Managing Director at KMSG, explains that the traditional ‘Big Bang’ approach often takes a longer time, sometimes up to 6 months, to deliver mission-critical systems that prove to be ineffective because of changing customer requirements, technology or stakeholders. Agile development methodologies are a proven approach for rapidly delivering the highest priority customer requirements (PR Newswire, 2013). As we know deploying results sooner rather than later, better adapt to change and respond faster, and not to worry about premature optimizations are the advantages of Agile focusing on value over constrains. Agile has substantial advantages, and it’s important to know the limitations and risks it brings. Since Agile does not follow the complete instruction and detailed work, documentation tends to get sidetracked, which makes it harder for new members to get up to speed. It’s more difficult to measure progress than it is in traditional methods because progress happens across several cycles. Agile requires a commitment of time and resources over an extended period of time and it is possible the unexpected will come to pass (Hussey & Baile, 2016). Agile demands more time and energy from everyone because developers and customers must constantly interact with each other.

The article published on March 14th by The New York Times about the amazon merchant overstocked the cleaning and sanitizing supplies for retail soon after the first death was announced by COVID-19 was an interesting story to read. He cleaned up all the nearby retail store’s selves for him to make more money by selling via the digital market. Few hundred bottles of sanitizers were sold with higher profit and unfortunate for him, Amazon withdraws all the accounts trying to make a profit in this pandemic situation. He is now stuck with more than 17,700 bottles of sanitizers and cleaning supplies. To regulators and many others, the sellers are sitting on a stockpile of medical supplies during a pandemic. The attorney general’s offices in California, Washington, and New York are all investigating price gouging related to the coronavirus (Nicas, J. 2020). He might be possibly facing the law for this action. An official at the Washington attorney general’s office said the agency believed it could apply the state’s consumer-protection law to sue platforms or sellers (Nicas, J. 2020). Not knowing the possible constraints on the project, only focusing value sometimes backfires. Thus, it is imperative to understand and keep a balance between the constraints and the product value.

The agile approach of focusing on value over constraints has been the center of attention for many decades. It first started in the software development industry and now it has moved to other industries. This principle helps us measure performance on a project.

Value must be our priority and at the top of our list of things that we must do. Constraints such as costs and time should be secondary. Agile project management focuses on the completion of the overall goals and objectives of a project.

Some of the advantages are that it helps us see value determination, value prioritization, and value creation. Value determinations tells the costs and benefits of a project, and at this point is where the PM sees if a project is valuable. On the other hand, value prioritization tells us about the primary things that we must do. Value creation is all about long term benefits of a project. All these are advantages of focusing in value over constraints.

According to many, some of the disadvantages of focusing on value over constraints is that there is lack of discipline. Others say that there is no formal set of rules or standards. Despite these arguments many still follow the principle proposed by agile methodologies.

The New York Times published a story on how necessary ventilators are in the era of the COVID-19 virus. Since the 2000s the federal government agencies have been aware of the lack of ventilators. According to the New York Times efforts had been placed to build a cheaper solution when it comes to ventilators.

As I read the article, I noticed that this story is a great example why it is important to focus on value over constraints. The deficiency of ventilators was found more than a decade ago. In the past, scientist tried to find ways to build ventilators rapidly and more affordable. Yet, they never made this idea concrete, and now we are paying for the consequences of not materializing this idea. This is not the fault of anyone, but as PMs is very important to focus on the materialization of our ideas to bring value to our organizations.
